CAG has taken a critical view of the Government's station
redevelopment plans which have been allotted Rs. 1 lakh crore.
The CAG report reasons that lack of space for trains on the stations is the
biggest cause of train delays.

findings after collecting and studying data from 15
stations—Patna, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (earlier
Mughalsarai Jn.), New Delhi, Delhi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Mathura,
Howrah, Jaipur, Bhopal, Itarsi, Ahmedabad,
Vijayawada, Chennai Central and Nagpuracross 10 railway zones and found that of
the 164 platforms, only 100 had the capacity to park a competition success review train having 24 or
more coaches. Consequently, the longer
trains either have to wait till the
main platforms are vacant or these trains are parked on shorter platforms, thus leading to problems for

boarding or de-boarding the train. Of the 15 stations that CAG studied, all except
4 stations—Itarsi, Howrah, Ahmedabad and
Bhopal—made the trains wait at the outer for over 15 minutes each. Of the 2,436
